1955 Hamilton Viscount

Hamilton Viscount, c. 1955, 14k Solid Gold case by Jonell Case Co.

Recently purchased this beautiful Hamilton months ago. This model is called the Viscount. It has a beautiful art-deco case in 14-karat solid gold, and powered with the ever reliable Hamilton 770 caliber, commonly regarded as “America’s Patek”. As of writing, it has been my everyday watch ever since.

I paired it with a custom Cranberry coloured Shell Cordovan leather strap made by KAMI Leather based in Oslo, Norway. They did a fantastic job.

Hamilton was considered to be one of the best American-made watches, beginning in the 1900’s when their pocket watches were found to be more accurate than the Swiss made ones for railroad usage. They were also the very first to come-up with battery operated watches in 1957 with their ELECTRIC series, which would serve as a precursor to the quartz watches of today. Sadly by the end of the 60’s, the Swiss has dominated the watch market, and Hamilton, along with other notable American watchmakers, were bought out.

Notable Hamilton watch wearers: John Dillinger owned a Hamilton pocket watch, Elvis Presley wore a 1957 Hamilton Electric Ventura, and the characters in Interstellar (2014) wore Hamilton Khakis.
