In the 1950’s, Tart Optical NYC was one of the premiere spectacle makers in its day, they are most famous for their “ARNEL” model, but they also have another sought after model called the “F.D.R.”
The FDR model features the 3:3 hinge formation, thick acetate plastics, and very thick temples/arms, giving the wearer a very edgy appearance. It was popularly sold in black or mock tortoise shell.
Decades later in the 1980’s, Shady Character Unlimited approached Tart Optical if they could reproduce some of their designs but updated to suit the tastes of the decade. One of them was the FDR brought back to life, but was made available in a wide variety of colors such as yellow, blue, and pictured above, Marbled Burgundy. This was simply called, the “Classic” model.
I had them fitted with grey-blue polarized mineral glass lenses from Persol.
